Hello world!
Today is a day off for me, so I am just at home catching up on some computer work that has been left untouched in the last week or so. I was totally being lazy in my room until someone rang the doorbell twice. I rushed down, but no one was there! This happens to me at least once a month I think. Oh well, I got up and started cooking rice so I guess it at least got me in motion for the day.
Speaking of rice, Bento 101 Assignment 2, Part B is up! It was about finding the right bento box for you. As I said in my last post, Kohei picked mine out for me and he did a great job! I had been debating for a few months, but the one he found is a great size for me and it’s cute! Here it is:
I’m not sure why the color of the counter is so different in one picture vs. the other – guess that is what I get for taking pictures with my phone! But, there it is – my obento.
Actually, I bought out my boyfriend’s obento box a few weeks ago as well. I got up early yesterday and cooked obento for my him for Valentine’s Day since he isn’t such a fan of chocolate (as homemade sweets are the thing to do for your guy here in Japan) and he just started a new job out in a more rural part of Tokyo. There are no restaurants there really, so the whole company orders lunch from a delivery service every day! It is fairly cheap, but there is absolutely no choice in food – you get whatever is on the menu for that particular day.
So, I made a not-so-typical Japanese bento with steak (he does love beef), simmered shiitake mushrooms, and sauteed watercress. It wasn’t the most colorful obento ever, but I think he enjoyed it. The rice was questionable…that is something I am still battling with, how to cool rice completely without letting it dry out. I guess time and practice will help! I threw in four chocolate covered strawberries in cute Valentine’s box, as well. It was Valentine’s Day after all!

The recipe is from this book -> Bento Love.
Until soon!
Amanda
